The old saying goes that ‘All good dogs go to heaven’. That has been the hopes and prayers in our household for the past 30 hours or so. Yesterday afternoon one of our ’special children’ as we call them was struck and killed by a vehicle on the highway that runs close to our house. Pictured above (with our daughter Gabbey) is the latest photo we can find of our Blackberry Meadows (better known as Bailey), taken this past Christmas. Bad hairday and all…her coat was still growing back in from the summer’s shaving. Though I can hostly say, we were gearing up to likely get hundreds more pictures in the coming weeks and months, as she was less than 2 weeks from delivering her first litter of pups.

Though everyone in the house and beyond has been in mourning contemplating over what could have, should have, would have etc… to prevent this tragic loss, there is only one thought that keeps us driving forward, simply that; God has taken her and her babies from us to provide companionship to other souls who were more in need of that special kind of love that only Bailey and her children can provide. Sure we have other springers, five now, but none can fill a particular void that now haunts our home. Bailey was Gab’s baby, more often than not she could be found under or wrapped around her head at night, waiting for the alarm clock so she could awaken her to start each day. She was never much of a bird dog, she was never trained to be, but she sure was an awfully sweet lap dog, almost too sweet and cuddly at times.

It’s said that, time heals all wounds, and yes that may hold true, for now we’ve only one another to hold onto and lean upon for support, the rest of our extended family of ’special children’ are well aware of the loss as well and have joined in with the subdued atmosphere of the household as if holding their own vigil.

These critters have helped Angel and I (and Gab too) continue on with life, filling much of the emptiness that has been left in the house as we’ve watched both of our sons move out and on with their lives, knowing Gab will follow the same path in what seems a very short number of years as well. That is the way of things.
